In collaboration with Juliana Steiner, Artistic Director of La Reserva Guatoc, Santander, Colombia, present Sua-ty (Canción de Sol), a weaving workshop of the traditional ‘sol de naranjito’ needle lace. The workshop will take place in La Esperanza Natural Reserve in Manatí, led by master weaver Jasmine Rivera.

Protocinema presents A Few In Many Places, a multi-city group exhibition that addresses on-going collapses and cycles of violence, through various forms of collectivity. Taking place in Seoul, Bangkok, Istanbul, New York, Santurce, and Guatemala City, all of these interventions use sustainable exhibition-making models of reducing exploitation (of natural resources, labor, and knowledge) and consumption (no shipping or flying). This year, collaborators present works on continuing inequalities happening in both physical and digital realms. Developed by Protocinema in 2020, A Few In Many Places maintains a foot in physical real-life, small, and safe get-togethers in each community while utilizing far-reaching digital support structures, to be both hyper-local and globally interconnected. Each chapter is site-responsive while speaking across the regions and produced in a format that allows for forms of engagement under various conditions of lockdowns or other contingent situations. 

In Santurce, Seoul, and Guatemala City, the artists will engage with the different communities and silenced histories through manifold ways. In Santurce, Jorge González’s collective pedagogical platform called Escuela de Oficios will present an installation and a series of interventions and in-person programs in collaboration with artisans, activists, historians, and artists across Borikén (Puerto Rico) that promote indigeous approaches to communal gathering. The project, entitled Bateyes del Chibal, focuses on engaging with communal belonging within the context of ceremonial plazas, in Borikén (Puerto Rico), ancestrally called bateys by indigenous and Afro-descendent people in the Caribbean. 

For Bateyes del Chibal, González built a site-specific installation in his studio that merges various aspects of his practice. Walls of locally harvested and woven plant fibers act as backdrop to a wooden altar in the shape of a pyramid that is a central aspect of the Rosario Cantao tradition and ceremony. González’s studio acts as hub for activities for the duration of this project. Drawings, tools, reference material and works in progress are also on view.

This tradition is celebrated in Santurce, site of former indigeous communities, as well as the location of the festival and González’ studio. 

Programs and workshops will be hosted through June and July that continue to engage with community activities. The studio will act as hub for the duration of the project with works and literature on view by appointment. 

A batey is a plaza or cleared-out delimited space in the land used by indigenous communities where ancestral invocation takes place for areytos (ceremonious acts), celebration, and protection. The title Bateyes del Chibal also refers to the ancient voice of the xibal, a word of Mayan origin, meaning descendent: calling the mother. The significance of xibal(o) was inherited by the Canjíbaro people to self-identify as jíbaro, a name for the Boricua campesino (Puerto Rican farmer or rural worker); a term that has survived and is embedded in the culture of indigenous people of the Puerto Rican archipelago. In the Canjíbaro worldview, Mayan heritage is interwoven within ancient cultural exchanges of the Caribbean region.

Jorge Gonzales Santos (b. 1981, Borikén) maintains a practice that serves as a platform for the recuperation of Boricua (Puerto Rican) material culture in an attempt to produce new narratives between the indigenous and the modern. González received his BFA from Escuela de Artes Plásticas y Diseño, San Juan, Puerto Rico, in 2006. González was included in the formative Latinx group exhibition, Pacha, Llaqta, Wasichay: Indigenous Space, Modern Architecture, New Art, at The Whitney Museum of American Art (2018), the Chicago Architecture Biennial in Chicago, IL (2019), and most recently the Toronto Biennial of Art (2022). Currently, González is a Jane Lombard Fellow (2020-22) at the The Vera List Center for Arts and Politics. González lives and works in San Juan.

A Few In Many Places is accompanied by a new edition of ProtoZine, with commissioned texts from a range of different perspectives by the curatorial group Collective Rewilding (Sara Garzón, Ameli Klein, and Sabina Oroshi), philosopher Erik Bordeleau and collaborative essay connecting two city interventions (Santurce and Istanbul) and five collaborators Kathryn Hamilton / Deniz Tortum, Zeynep Kayan, Jorge González, Mari Spirito.

Protocinema presenta Unas Cuantas en Varios Lugares, una exposición grupal a presentarse en múltiples ciudades que aborda colapsos en proceso y ciclos de violencia a través de varias formas de colectividad. En todas las intervenciones, las cuales se darán en Seúl, Bangkok, Estambul, Nueva York, varios sitios de Puerto Rico y Ciudad de Guatemala, se emplean modelos sustentables para la celebración de exposiciones, con los cuales se busca reducir la explotación (de recursos naturales, labor y conocimiento) y el consumo (no se recurre a transporte marítimo o aéreo). Este año, los colaboradores presentan obras que tratan sobre inequidades que continúan existiendo tanto en ambientes físicos como digitales. Unas Cuantas en Varios Lugares, un trabajo desarrollado por Protocinema en el 2020, recurre a reuniones pequeñas y seguras dadas en ambientes físicos de cada comunidad, pero a la vez utiliza estructuras digitales de soporte de amplio alcance. El resultado es un evento que por un lado es híper local, pero al mismo tiempo genera conexiones a nivel global.  

En Santurce, Seúl y Ciudad de Guatemala, los artistas se relacionarán con las diferentes comunidades e historias silenciadas de diversas formas. En Santurce, el artista boricua Jorge González y su plataforma colectiva, La Escuela de Oficios, presentarán una serie de intervenciones y programas presenciales en colaboración con la Organización del Pueblo Indígena Can-jíbaro de Borikén (CAN) y Galería Embajada. La serie de eventos, titulada Bateyes del Chibal, inicia el 14 de mayo en el taller del artista, el cual servirá como centro de actividades, en Santurce. Bateyes del Chibal se presentará en conjunto con las Fiestas de Cruz y su tradicional rosario cantado. El propósito de Bateyes es crear un sentimiento de pertenencia comunitaria en el contexto de los antiguos bateyes, o plazas ceremoniales. González mantiene su énfasis en lo comunitario para este proyecto con su colaboración con el Taller Comunidad La Goyco, un centro cultural comunitario en el barrio Machuchal, en Santurce, desde donde se extiende la celebración de las Fiestas de Cruz, los días 15 y 16 de mayo. El Rosario Cantao tiene importancia en este proyecto, ya que actúa como la conexión sincrética entre tradiciones cristianas y prácticas religiosas indígenas.

Escuela de Oficios es la plataforma de trabajo colectivo que subyace a la práctica de Jorge González, la cual se enfoca en la creación de espacios de aprendizaje mutuo como articulaciones críticas dotadas de conciencia respecto a la tierra, los recursos y el territorio. 

Organización del Pueblo Canjíbaro de Borikén (CAN) González también forma parte de los esfuerzos de Organización del Pueblo Canjíbaro de Borikén (CAN), un colectivo independiente de trabajadores culturales indígenas que se compone de líderes comunitarios, activistas, pensadores, educadores, agricultores y artistas. Tienen como meta hacer accesibles las perspectivas de los indígenas de Borikén y del Caribe en lo que concierne a asuntos relacionados a la tierra y el territorio: colonización, visión de mundo, actos de compensación, historia, espiritualidad y otros temas que guardan relación con las comunidades de la región. Buscan también dar un sentido político a estas perspectivas. Como colectivo, los miembros de CAN reafirman su identidad como Can-Jíbaros, descendientes de la Serpiente, con creencias que tienen presencia entre los Jíbaros Borikuas y sus hermanos caribeños.

El trabajo de Jorge González puede describirse como investigación teórica-práctica a largo plazo sobre modelos de producción que toman en cuenta el conocimiento precolonial y popular de Borikén. Es una práctica que se da comúnmente de forma colectiva, y que envuelve procesos de aprendizaje mutuo que ayudan a comprender las relaciones entre lo autóctono y lo moderno, entre lo industrial y lo manual, entre el aficionado y el maestro. Este proceso polimorfo es un intercambio continuo que propone un ritmo de trabajo desacelerado, contrario a cómo funciona el capitalismo contemporáneo.

Algunes en Muchos Lugares estará acompañado por una nueva edición de ProtoZine, la cual incluye textos creados por comisión que presentan una variedad de perspectivas diferentes. Estos fueron escritos por: Laura Raicovich, curadora y autora; Erik Bordeleau, filósofo; Collective Rewilding, así como textos desarrollados por parejas de curadores: Mari Spirito y Jorge Gonzales Santos; Gim Ikhyun & Miji Lee, y Esvin Alarcón Lam; Lila Nazemian y Abhijan Toto. Los textos de ProtoZine y los programas públicos en curso se presentarán a lo largo de la exhibición.
