Protocinema Emerging Curator Series presents Julie Béna, Anna & the Jester in Window of Opportunity, a solo exhibition by Julie Béna, curated by Annelie J. Graf at the French Institute in Istanbul. The exhibition centers around the film Anna & the Jester in Window of Opportunity (2019), which explores and critiques the concept of transparency in the form of an architectural tale. The film is accompanied by site-specific elements, picking up ideas of lucidity, visibility and exposure in today’s society, in Istanbul and abroad.

Protocinema Emerging Curator Series was initiated in 2015, for selected young curators work side by side with mentors in the process of realizing exhibitions. With feedback and guidance from experienced professionals young curators gain valuable vocational insights into the field and move toward developing their own voices. By providing early-career curators and artists with the tools they need to grow, Protocinema participates in ensuring that the next generation is equipped to contribute to vital conversations across regions.

Julie Béna’s new works touch upon fundamental aspects of transparency, exploring the concept in a playful yet genuine way. While transparency has long been traded as a positive development towards a more open and accessible society, it has also transformed into an ideology, practice of which is now under severe pushback. Transparency as a synonym for full exposure is understood as a mechanism of control, influencing our surroundings, habitats and relationships to each other and ourselves. Here the physical experience is emphasized, given that this exhibition space is in a heavily protected oasis, at the center of Istanbul, with its own control mechanisms.

Anna & the Jester in Window of Opportunity explores through animation and narration and by bringing to life different characters the concept of transparency. On her journey through a surreal, architectural landscape the double character Anna and the Jester encounter three babies and Opportunity, the transparent architectural landscape, partly real partly fictional characters. Through engaging in a dialogue with each other they examine the idea of transparency, aspects of surveillance and their perception of the world. The film leaves room for different readings and interpretations yet raising important questions of life and existence.

Julie Béna, born in 1982, lives and works between Paris and Prague. A graduate of the Villa Arson in Nice. In 2019, Béna had solo exhibitions at the Jeu de Paume in Paris, CAPC museum in Bordeaux and the Amparo Museum in Puebla Mexico. Her work has recently been exhibited the the Biennale de Rennes (FR); Polansky Gallery (CZ);1646 (NL); C art C Madrid (ES); Bozar (BE) and Chapter NY (US). Within the last years, Béna has staged performances at Centre Pompidou (FR); ICA London (GB); M Leuven (BE); Palais de Tokyo (FR) and Performa NY (US). Julie Béna is represented by Galerie Joseph Tang, Paris, and Polansky Gallery, Prague.

Annelie J. Graf is an arts programmer and curator currently based in Basel. Since 2016 she has been co-programming and managing Art Basel´s Conversations program for its shows in Basel and Miami Beach, alongside Mari Spirito, Founder and Executive Director of Protocinema, Hans Ulrich Obrist, Artistic Director of the Serpentine Galleries London, artist Julieta Aranda, and dealer and writer Edward Winkleman, amongst others. As a close collaborator of artist Marcel Zaes she conceptualized and realized two large-scale productions at BONE Performance Art Festival Bern (2016) and at Cabaret Voltaire Zurich (2019), respectively. In October 2019 she will be joining Trevor Paglen's studio in Berlin as Studio Manager.

Protocinema Emerging Curator Series was initiated in 2015, with 5533 artists-run space with Volkan Aslan and Nancy Atakan, in Istanbul, and now continues annually in different places. Annelie J. Graf was mentored by: Sarina Basta, Curator, Confort Moderne, Poitiers; François Quintin, Director, Lafayette Anticipations, Paris; Mary Rinebold, Independent Writer, Curator, London; Mari Spirito, Executive Director, Curator, Protocinema, Istanbul, New York.

Protocinema commissions and presents site-aware art around the world. We produce context-specific projects of the highest artistic quality that are accessible to everyone through public programming. Through art, Protocinema evokes empathy towards an understanding of differences across regions. Founded by Mari Spirito in 2011, Protocinema is a non-profit 501(c)3, free of 'brick and mortar'. La série Protocinema Emerging Curator présente Julie Béna, Anna & the Jester dans La Fenêtre d’Opportunité, une exposition personnelle de Julie Béna, organisée par Annelie J. Graf à l'Institut français à Istanbul. L'exposition s'articule autour du film « Anna & the Jester dans La Fenêtre d’Opportunité» (2019), qui explore et critique le concept de transparence sous la forme d'un conte architectural. Le film est accompagné d’une installation pensée spécifiquement pour l’espace d’exposition de l’Institut français, reprenant des notions de lucidité, de visibilité et de perception dans la société actuelle, à Istanbul et à l’étranger.

La série Protocinema Emerging Curator a été lancée en 2015, pour que des jeunes commissaires sélectionnés travaillent aux côtés de mentors dans le processus de réalisation d'expositions. Grâce aux conseils et à l’expertise de ces professionnels expérimentés, les jeunes commissaires acquièrent de précieuses informations sur la profession et développent leur propre voix. En fournissant aux commissaires et aux artistes en début de carrière les outils dont ils ont besoin pour se développer, Protocinema veille à ce que la prochaine génération soit en mesure de contribuer aux discussions et échanges indispensables entre régions.

Les nouvelles œuvres de Julie Béna évoquent certains aspects fondamentaux de la transparence, les explorant de manière espiègle et sincère. Alors que le concept de transparence a longtemps été considéré comme un développement positif vers une société plus ouverte et accessible, il s’est peu à peu transformé en idéologie dont l’usage est à présent très critiqué. La transparence en tant que synonyme de mise à nu totale est maintenant perçue comme un mécanisme de contrôle qui influence notre environnement, nos habitats, nos relations les uns avec les autres et avec nous-mêmes. Ici, l'expérience physique est encore amplifiée, étant donné que cet espace d'exposition se trouve dans une oasis fortement protégée, au centre d'Istanbul, avec ses propres mécanismes de contrôle.

« Anna & the Jester dans La Fenêtre d’Opportunité » explore à travers l'animation et la narration, en donnant vie à différents personnages, le concept de transparence. Lors de son voyage dans un paysage architectural surréaliste, le personnage double d’Anna & the Jester rencontre trois bébés et Opportunité -paysage architectural transparent- oscillant entre personnages réels et fictionnels. A travers le dialogue engagé avec les uns et les autres, les personnages interrogent la notion de transparence, les aspects de la surveillance et leur perception du monde. Le film laisse place à différentes interprétations tout en soulevant d’importantes questions sur la vie et l'existence.

Annelie J. Graf est une programmatrice et commissaire artistique basée à Bâle. Depuis 2016, elle co-programme et gère le programme Conversations d'Art Basel pour ses spectacles à Bâle et à Miami Beach, aux côtés de Mari Spirito, fondatrice et directrice exécutive de Protocinema, Hans Ulrich Obrist, directeur artistique des Serpentine Galleries London, l'artiste Julieta Aranda et l’écrivain Edward Winkleman, entre autres. En tant que proche collaborateur de l'artiste Marcel Zaes, elle a conceptualisé et réalisé respectivement deux productions de grande envergure au BONE Performance Art Festival Bern (2016) et au Cabaret Voltaire Zurich (2019). En octobre 2019, elle rejoindra le studio de Trevor Paglen à Berlin en tant que directeur de studio.
