Protocinema is happy to announce Sidian Liu as Protocinema Communications Manager.

Sidian Liu is an artist and producer who brings her vision and expertise to Protodispatch, our monthly digital publication, Protocinema’s social media platforms, and to assist the curation and support of our exhibition making.

Liu is an artist, translator, knitter, and home builder. Liu also works as a Studio Manager for Barbara Nessim; was a performer at Rirkrit Tiravanija: A LOT OF PEOPLE, MoMA PS1, October 2023 – March 2024; and assisted in producing a localized edition of Root sequence. Sidian Liu was born in 1997 in Foshan, China and now lives in New York. She obtained her BA in English at Shanghai International Studies University in 2019, and her MFA in Photography at Parsons, The New School in 2023. In Liu’s artwork she utilizes images, performance, installations, and socially-engaged methods to explore the possibilities of nesting and loving beyond boundaries. Informed by relational aesthetics, her work is often driven by personal narratives, she takes a participatory approach, using traces to facilitate intimacy from a distance while respecting personal boundaries.

Liu is the recipient of the 2024 Denis Roussel Fellowship, Center for Fine Art Photography, CO, US; the 2023 Snider Prize, Museum of Contemporary Photography, IL, US; and the 2021 Kunpeng Award, the 21st Pingyao International Photography Festival, Pingyao, China, 2021. She was placed in the Top 10 of the 9th Annual Photography Rankings in China, Photography Museum of Lishui, and won the first place in both Miroir Project’s First Female Photographer Competition and the Banshan Photography Award, Japan, 2020. Her works have been shown in Tokyo, Beijing, Shanghai, Wuhan, Lishui, Pingyao, and New York City. Liu’s translations have been published in LEAP. She has translated for the Hangzhou Triennial of Fiber Art, the International Awards for Art Criticism, and various arts institutions, including Pro Helvetia Shanghai, the Shanghai Minsheng Art Museum, Wu Space (Shenyang, China), and Aranya Art Center ( Xiamen, China).
